Addressed by Maestro Valery Gergiev as ‘a wonderful horn player’ and ‘the biggest surprise of the competition’ at the gala concert of the 16th International Tchaikovsky Competition, Yun Zeng, a 19-year-old gold medalist in the new brass category has become a rising star of today’s musical world. Born into a musical family in the year of 1999, Yun Zeng began learning French horn with his father, Jie Zeng, principal horn player of Sichuan Symphony Orchestra, at the age of 6. He was both times the first place in major assessment when admitted to the middle school as well as undergraduate studies of Central Conservatory of Music in 2011 and 2017 respectively, in the class of Prof. Quan Wen. During this period, he was funded by ‘Best of the Best Project’ (2012 until now) – a program designed by the conservatory especially for talented young musicians, and ‘Edifier Musician Foundation’ (2014). In academic year 2019-2020, he was studying in Haute Ecole de Musique de Genève as an exchange student with Prof. Bruno Schneider.
As a soloist, Yun Zeng has performed some of the most renowned French horn repertoire with Mariinsky Orchestra, Prague Philharmonia, Orchestra di Padova e del Veneto, Central Conservatory of Music Symphony Orchestra, National Center for the Performing Arts Orchestra, Suzhou Symphony Orchestra, Xi’an Symphony Orchestra, Sichuan Symphony Orchestra and Sichuan Philharmonic Orchestra. Some of his performances have been broadcast by China Central Television, All-Russia State Television and Radio Broadcasting Company and Medici.tv.
Since 2014, Yun Zeng’s horn has sponsored by BRIZ Musical Instrument co., Ltd.. He is playing “BRIZ 2000TP” horn now.
